We are in Bogota. Happy. As promised, we signed the adoption decree for the children. There was much, much running around getting signatures, on the part of the lawyer, mostly, but that document is in our hands. The children are officially our children. Finally. We had been willing to come back to Bogota even if that wans't ready. It would have involved one of us traveling back to Cartagena to sign but, we are so lucky that it was done before we left.
On the part of Cartagena, we are just waiting for the new birth certificates, where they have their new last name and us as their parents. As much as we tried, we got to that office 15 mintues before it closed. We have three b/c to reissue, we need 8 certified copies of each one, and they type the original....impossible to get all that done in 15 minutes. We were able to drop off all the documentation they need to issue them, I was able to sign off on them and we paid the necessary fees. Our contact is supposed to pick them up Monday and have them overnighted to Bogota.
So, that's where we stand. Quite pleased, given that no one in Colombia thougtht we could pull this off before the holiday closures. There are so many angels looking over us, so many prayers, so many good wishes, so much love...that it just happened. And for that, once again, we are grateful.
Jose and I were exhausted yesterday -- I was running around doing errands all day and he watched the children most of the day -- we still had to pack and clean the apt. We did it. We make a good team. We didn't go to bed until everything was in place: all luggage lined up, every outfit for the morning set out, all the necessary paperwork in one spot.
The morning came quickly. As Jose started taking basgs downstairs (we had been staying on the 13th floor -- lucky number), I started getting the children up and ready, one by one, oldest to youngest. We were all downstairs ready, to be at the airport by 7. The van we had contracted never showed up. Maybe it did show up in Colombian time but not the time we needed it. We hailed two cabs, and somehow managed to get eveyone and everything to the airport. The only casualty was Santiago's personalized, cute little backpack. Oh, well.
The new boys had never flown. They were very excited. We had a good flight and, this time, our van was ready to pick us and take us to the hotel.
Unlike the apartment, there's no cleaning involved (except for the expected messes we seven create with our stuff) and there's no cooking. I believe there is even a couple of laundry machines so no more "washing" clothes in a bucket. Yay! The cooking part has its downside for some of us picky eates but we'll survive. Lunch was fine and liked by all but dinner not so much.
But, I'm glad we are here for this week. In terms of noise, it feels so quiet here comparted to were we had been. We don't hear traffic, horses. sirens, buses with loud music, etc. -- yes, we could hear all that and more from the 13th floor. Still, our light sleeper is awake as I type and is 10:25 pm local time.
So, we are getting settled here to finish off. Wish us all a productive week.
We miss home, family, friends. Good night to all.
